We feel mouth guards should be worn during any athletic event where a blow could occur to the head area. The costs for replacing a single knocked out or severely damaged tooth can exceed $2000. The cushion effect of the material helps to prevent damage to the teeth, and bone fractures.

There are several types of mouthguards currently available:

  1. Stock mouthguards  found in sporting goods stores come in limited sizes (usually small, medium and large). They are ready to use, out of the package, without any preparation. They unfortunately provide very little protection for the teeth and jaw. They are bulky and do not hold on the teeth. They must be held in place by constantly biting down which interferes with breathing and speaking. They often go unworn because they are uncomfortable. We do not recommend this type of guard.

  2. Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards are formed in the mouth by the player. They are made from thermoplastic material which is immersed in boiling water and then formed in the mouth using biting pressure. They are often bulky and cause gagging. Their fit and protective properties vary greatly based on how well the player follows the instructions for molding. They are better than Stock mouthguards but still provide little protection.

  3. Custom-made Mouthguards are made by a dentist on a mold of the players teeth. They interfere the least with speaking and have virtually no effect on breathing, giving players a competitive advantage. There are two types of custom mouth guards:

a. Single Layer Mouthguards-fit  comfortably and provide moderate protection.

b. Pressure-Laminated Multi- Layer Mouthguards-provide the best comfort and protection.

If you or a family member is active in sports, we can construct a custom fitted mouthguard . The cost is well below the cost of repairing a damaged tooth. Why risk your teeth?
