Use a soft brush. Using a hard brush for long periods of time can wear the enamel on the teeth and cause your gums to recede.  First brush the biting surfaces of the teeth using small, rapid  back and forth strokes.

Then brush the sides of the teeth being particularly careful to clean down near the gums. Plaque and food near the gum line causes root decay and gum disease.

Place the brush half on the gum and half on the tooth and hold it at a 45 degree angle. Take small, rapid back and forth strokes. Do not take long "sawing" strokes. The strokes should only clean one or two teeth at a time. After cleaning this area for 10 - 15 seconds, pick up the brush and move to the next area. Start on the top right back most molar and proceed around your teeth in order. Do the same on the inner and outer surfaces and on the bottom teeth.

Use a fluoride containing tooth paste. Avoid "tartar control" tooth pastes if your teeth are sensitive. They tend to increase tooth sensitivity.
