I really enjoy making dentures. This is probably because no other procedure that I perform allows me to make such an instant major improvement in a patients appearance. Denture fabrication, however, can also be challenging. Unlike most dental procedures, new dentures usually take some time for the patient to adapt to wearing. This is particularly true if the patient has never worn a denture before. I also always tell any patient contemplating tooth extraction, and denture fabrication, that no denture, no matter how well it fits, will give them the same chewing ability as a full set of healthy natural teeth. Most people, however, that have their natural teeth extracted, and replaced with a denture, have endured limited eating ability due to many broken or loose teeth for many years. These people usually see an immediate increase in their chewing ability and comfort. After an adjustment period, which varies from patient to patient, most patients find they can chew better and more comfortably then they have been able to in years. This adjustment period may take only a few days for some patients or as long as several months. Younger patients, in good health, tend to adapt quicker. The fee for all dentures that I fabricate, includes unlimited denture adjustment visits for one year. During these visits, dentures are "fine tuned" to maximize patient comfort and chewing ability. For patients needing several natural teeth extracted we can make what is called an immediate denture. An immediate denture is a denture that we fabricate before extracting the patients teeth. On the day the patients teeth are extracted, the denture is ready to be inserted immediately. The patient is never made to walk around with out teeth. A full denture replaces a full arch of teeth and is totally supported by the patients gums. If a few healthy strong teeth can be saved, a Partial Denture is usually an easier to adapt to alternative.
Partial dentures attach to the patients remaining natural teeth, by little clips, and usually hold more securely than a full denture. Unlike fixed bridges, however, they need to be removed by the patient for cleaning and to clean the remaining natural teeth which anchor it.
