Q: Everyone should be using a "tartar control" toothpaste. A: False. We find that using "tartar control" toothpaste causes many peoples teeth to become sensitive to cold (particularly if they have gum recession). If you have sensitive teeth stop using these toothpastes. I expect you will see a decrease in the sensitivity of your teeth within a few weeks and very little change in the amount of tartar build up you get. Q: Raisins are a good snack and do not promote tooth decay. A: False. Raisins are very high in sugar and their stickiness causes the sugar to stay on the teeth for long periods of time. You should brush your teeth thoroughly after eating raisins.
Q: Diet soda can cause tooth decay. A: True- You may think that because diet sodas don’t contain sugar, that they are as safe for your teeth as they are for your waistline. Many diet sodas contain Phosphoric Acid which is a known cause of tooth decay. Q: The degrees D.D.S. and D.M.D. are both dentists and both require very similar training. A: True. D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and D.M.D. (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degrees are basically the same. Schools which give the D.M.D. degree claim they give their students more training in general medicine in addition to dentistry and dental surgery. I received my D.M.D. degree from Tufts University School Of Dental Medicine in 1983. Q: In terms of preventing cavities, drinking tap water is usually better than drinking bottled water. A: True. Most tap water in this area now contains added fluoride. Most bottled water does not contain fluoride. Q: Some toothpaste’s can whiten your teeth. A: False. No toothpaste available contains any bleaching ingredient which can "whiten" your teeth. ![]() |
