Orthodontics is the area in dentistry concerned with straightening teeth and correcting your smile to make it more esthetically pleasing and placing your teeth in their most efficient positions. Orthodontics , at its very core means straight teeth (ortho= straight, dontics= teeth).

When thinking about orthodontics or braces most people think of large metal braces that are on the teeth for 5 years or more. Some even feel that the braces are very painful as we are moving teeth. The fact of the matter is with modern advanced braces are either smaller , clear or tooth colored , or invisible with invisible braces (invisalign). This makes wearing braces a lot less noticeable or even invisible. With modern techniques we can finish some cases with adults in 6 months or less and children's braces are usually finished in a year and a half.

At Palmyra Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we are constantly aware of the forces we place on the teeth during you or your child's orthodontic treatment. We practice a cutting edge orthodontic technique known as light force orthodontics in which we place minimal forces on the teeth during your time in braces. This accomplishes 2 things; it allows us to move teeth much quicker than traditional techniques. It has been proven that continuous light forces on the teeth move teeth faster and more predictably than the traditional technique of using heavy forces and with far less discomfort to the patient.

So what techniques do a majority of orthodontists and dentists use? They use a technique called straightwire orthodontics. A technique developed in 1912. Now back then they used metal bands to hold the braces on the teeth, so the braces have gotten much smaller, and they have developed new wires to use with the system but the brackets design has stayed much the same for almost 90 years. Light force orthodontics was developed in 1986 and over the last 20 years has been perfected to become, what we believe to be, the best orthodontic system available today.

The recent implementation of straightwire concept involved using a bracket that is the same for each patient and then using wires that are preformed and moving everyone's teeth into the same position and orientation. That means they are treating every person as if they are the same, rather than as an individual as they are. Light force orthodontics involves creating custom wires and using brackets that can be adjusted to place the teeth in the exact position that is optimal for that individual.

Don't get me wrong, straightwire or traditional technique braces can place the teeth in the correct and proper position for each person but it will require much more force and a much longer treatment time.

Traditional (straightwire) braces use up to 10 ounces of force where light force orthodontics rarely exceeds 2.5 ounces of force. Like previously stated this creates a more comfortable time in braces and shorter treatment time.
