When a tooth has been severely damaged by a cavity or broken in an accident,
many times not enough tooth remains to allow us to repair the damage with a
filling. The dental crown (also known as a "cap") is simply a covering made
to fit over the broken tooth. Today, crowns are usually made out of white porcelain
to accurately reproduce the original shape and color of the tooth they are
covering.
